Trigger Point Injections

Trigger Point Injections

Have a nagging, painful knot that just won’t go away?

A Trigger Point is a hyperirritable spot, a palpable nodule in the taut bands of the skeletal muscles’ fascia. Many of our patients experience trigger points and our approach to their resolution is unique.

We start with a consultation, exam and diagnostics if necessary to locate the “cause” of your issues and trigger points. If we address the trigger points themselves, we will perform a trigger point injection which incorporates Lidocaine and Marcaine injected directly into the center of the spastic muscle. Occasionally muscle energy techniques are used in conjunction to start the process of calming down the tissue. Next we use a Chiropractic adjustment to correct the spinal subluxation or joint fixation. This combination calms down the affected area by allowing joint stability and reduces muscle tension. The 2-4 days of relief given by trigger point injections allows the body to reset, reduces neural and muscular tension and reduces inflammation to the affected area of pain.

The staff at AIM then would incorporate stretching, exercise and regular chiropractic care to continue the positive progress. The loop of spasm, subluxation, pain and inflammation is interrupted and healing can now occur.

The cause of trigger points is chronic overuse of the muscle involved. This may have started from a trauma such as a car wreck or may be from a sports injury. Conversely, you have been in a very specific position repeatedly, over time like standing, sitting or twisting. Repetitive movements can also be detrimental to your musculoskeletal system.

Deconditioning is another term used with this type of issue. A street term of “out of shape” means the same thing as a chronic overuse injury. This is a lifestyle issue and weight training 2-3 times per week is very beneficial for stability and strength. Lifestyle, when correctly applied will overcome many chronic illnesses and help reduce acute injuries.

Trigger Point Injections help with muscle spasms, tension and pain, persistent tightening, and reduced muscle function. By breaking up the affected muscle fibers, this treatment helps to release the muscle spams and reduce symptoms.
